I'm dusting off my dreamwidth skills for the first time in a dramatically long time! I've been mostly on tumblr, and that's the mode my brain is in atm, so I apologize in advance for any culture clash. :)

Anyway, I'm Zal, I like indie games and fandom and environmental topics, among others. I'm glad to be here, and I hope everyone has a great time!

I implore you. If you are going to give your beautiful fluffy kitty whom you love so much a big smoochy kissy, then please. Apply chapstick AFTER the kiss--

My latest hobby is 'watching video essays by trans authors particularly but not exclusively if they have an essay on masculinity or gender and society'.

Recs:

  • Contrapoints
  • Jesse Gender
  • Lily Alexandre
  • Lady Emily
  • RickiHirsch
  • Alexander Avila
  • Oakwyrm
What I really want is so many essays about masculinity that someone writes a meta-analysis comparing and contrasting how the different authors approach the topic.

We can already compare Contrapoints, Jesse Gender, and Alexander Avila, where there's a fascinating sense of looking at it from both the inside and outside in all of them, but with Contrapoints and Jesse Gender, it's also a sense of 'I was there, now I'm not, and I'm so glad I'm not.' With Alexander Avila, his sense is more an energetic 'I'm there now and it sucks'. And like--these seem obvious and straightforward when stating it out loud, but the framing couldn't be more different, and speaks by itself: Alexander speaks to the viewer the whole way like they're a man that he's coaching through all the steps of manhood, taking them in for a look 'from the inside'. Other trans men might not take the same approach when writing about something like this, but I haven't seen others (yet, still looking), and it's just really interesting to see how everyone's extremely personal journies affect how they write about it.

Even when their conclusions are different (Contrapoints refrains from making recommendations to solve issues with Masculinity, feeling that it's not her place as someone who's not in that category, but Jesse Gender does), they all have experienced trauma in society's conceptualization of manhood and womanhood, and in the way they experienced society pressing both of these at them.  All of them have huge empathy for the issue, even as they show the stark cruelties of the system as it is. All of them are extremely clear on the harms of it all, and all of them agree on the part where the system Must Change.

I need more!! If anyone has recs for more authors, then please, more!!!

It's that time of month again, aka the time when I'm on the prowl to figure out what to say in a monthly call to my members of congress about supporting climate-friendly policies! My particular interests include things that are bipartisan. (My MoCs are conservatives and love oil and gas, so I need the best chances of trying to sell them on this that I can get.)

Today I urged my senators to support the newly reintroduced Prove It Act, and (whenever it gets reintroduced) the FOREST act, and I urged the house-of-rep to support the Market Choice act. (If anyone wants one-or-two sentence explanations of these lmk.)

Does anyone have recommendations for policies to bring up next time, or any thoughts on the ones that are in here? In an ideal world I would push for more intense measures, but I'm not sure they'd be practical given the congressmen involved, and I'd rather baby steps than being dead in the water.

I keep wishing there were active communities for the fandoms and topics that I like.

The solution to this interest is to make one myself.

From there my worry is that I'll still be attached to the community even long after I lose interest in it, much like I'm currently still attached to various wikis and etc.

From there I point out 'look, this obviously wasn't an issue for the people who made all these sleeping/dead communities still out there'

I want a place to go talk about Murderbot. And harvestella. And also things like that Control game, though I guess at some point that's just me on the prowl for indie games?

Hey if anyone reading this has a fav active community, lmk and I'll check it out!

Atrus in his diary: Haha look at our two boys, they're so wonderful and responsible, I think it's safe to leave them unsupervised with access to untold power and possible corruption, don't you diary-Catherine?

Atrus in Catherine's voicemail: oh god. Fuck. We fucked up, jesus.

Something economists are going to be looking at is how sales this Black Friday turn out and how big a spike companies get due to people being out and buying things. Lower holiday sale spikes generally mean worse things for the economy.

Do they account for how shitty Black Friday Sales are progressively becoming? Because in my own experience prices are literally higher during these 'sales', nevermind how big an 'It's cheaper, trust us!!' banner they have.

Ok so this is a fantastic breakdown of some huge legislation that was passed in the US about clean energy last year, and I feel like we should be talking way more about this even now.

News goons talking about this weren't exaggerating when they were boggling over 'the biggest climate change bill basically ever' because yeah, it kind of is. It's incentivizing clean energy infrastructure on basically every level, it's supporting electric conversion, it's supporting conservation, it's penalizing methane leaks, it's--ok yeah it's in the video. There's more that the video doesn't cover, but like, from what I can tell this is a good summary.

Important details about the Inflation Reduction Act that I feel should be especially highlighted: if you electrify your home and your car you might qualify for major tax breaks. The tax breaks vary depending on whether you're looking at electric cars vs non-gas heating and appliances for your home, as well as how much you make compared to your city's median income, so I'm not going to get into it here, but this is specifically looking to help disadvantaged communities.

Please keep learning more about the IRA!!! I'll also be looking and I'll share anything interesting that I find.

Coral Island: sorry, the actual release of game can't handle your old save file!

Me: Oh... well... I guess I'll have to be ok with it, and I guess I'll get a chance to build a better experience and help update the wiki and etc as I go

Coral Island: Also, we're letting you keep all the money you earned in your old 4-year save file. Have a million and a half coins
